Just released new dates for the Tom Hutchinson Cornet Camp

Tom has been Principal Cornet with the mighty Cory Band since 2009,  leading them in an unprecedented 16 year tenure as No.1 Brass Band in the World!

In addition he is Professor of Cornet at the Royal Welsh College of Music and is an internationally acclaimed soloist, performing globally.

Now you have the opportunity to spend a week living alongside Tom, being tutored and mentored by him in all aspects of, not only Cornet playing, but music and brass bands in general. All in the magnificent setting of Spain's Sierra Nevada mountains.

Tom Hutchinson - Principal Cornet, The Cory Band

Tom Hutchinson has been Principal Cornet with the mighty Cory since 2009 and led the band in his first year to its hat-trick winning European title in 2010. They followed that up with four British Open titles, six Welsh regional titles, six Brass in Concert Championship wins, three more European titles, and four National Final wins. He also led the band to two historic ‘Grand Slam’ wins in 2016 & 2019

He has won the band’s player of the year award on three occasions and has released two solo CD’s: ‘In Principal’ and ‘This Way’,

As well as playing with Cory he is Professor of Cornet at the Royal Welsh College of Music and cornet tutor for the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain.

With a maximum of only 6/7 students on the course, tuition is tailored to suit individual needs and abilities in a safe and comfortable environment where we support and help each other to improve. There'll be no judgment and no competitiveness.

"I want to help you to progress on the Cornet in any and every way I can: but more than that, I want to help you become a better musician, getting ever more satisfaction from your playing.

I won’t be forcing you to do anything you don’t want to do and I’ll always respect your right to "pass on this one’ - although I do hope you try new things.

I'll encourage you to ask questions- no question is ‘stupid’... Ask me to go back over stuff.... Pause me while you write something down... take a video note... Whatever helps you to progress."

The Course

The week caters for players of all abilities, from Intermediate upwards. Whether you've been playing for years or are returning after a break, the relaxed and individually tailored approach means that you will see real progress over the course of the week. A belief in focusing on getting the fundamentals right means that everything  will be relevant to you, irrespective of your ability.

Tuition will be a mixture of group and individual sessions and, as well as focusing on your technique, we will explore a range of skills to improve your playing and musicianship, such as:

  • Technique

  • Range

  • Tonguing

  • Section playing

  • Phrasing

  • Practice routines

  • Performance tips

  • and much more...

In addition, in the evening after Dinner we can all relax and talk about whatever comes up. It can be music related or not. We will, however, offer a range of short talks on topics like:

  • Getting the most from your available practice time

  • Cognitive Learning techniques to accelerate development

  • Dealing with Performance Anxiety

  • Mindfulness

But if you'd prefer you can just relax, have  a drink and ask questions in an informal environment. The house has a number of communal areas so you're free to join in or chill out somewhere else. Whatever you feel like.

There is space for non-playing partners to stay and there are plenty of places for them to explore while you are playing during the day.

Or they can just relax by the pool.....
